I was going to talk about the the sad rift developing - or the gaping chasm revealed - in Dutch society following the death of a Moroccan Dutch youth (see earlier this week). But I checked out my sitemeter first and now I've gone off on a completely different tack:
'Red sky at night, shepherd's delight', I wrote some weeks ago; even renamed my blog 'Red Sky' for a time. Someone picked it up via Yahoo by typing in the first lines of that rhyme. I followed the links from the search page along the following trail:
MetLink International Report for Primary Schools (fascinating stuff)
Weather and proverbs - gives you a whole list of tried and tested weather sayings
De Proverbio - Electronic Journal of International Proverb Studies
All the academic background you could ever wish for on English proverbs. Includes this learned article on Whether Weather 'Proverbs' are Proverbs
Nursery Rhymes - Lyrics and Origins - I don't know how reliable the texts about the origins are but if you've forgotten the words of one of your favourite rhymes, here's the place to find them back. They're all there - everything from 'Hickory, dickory, dock' to 'Ring a ring o rosies' and 'Polly put the kettle on'.
How sweet. I'd forgotten all about those little rhymes but the words come back instantly. The author's British. I wonder how many of these rhymes you guys in the USA know? Tell me, I'm curious.
