I found a centipede crawling up my bedroom wall the other day - within 24 hours of reading Nancy's insightful blog post about one of these hundred-legged critters near her own bed. Remarkable coincidence? A message? I don't know. I'm just slightly appalled at my reaction. Without a moment's hesitation I looked around for something with which to squash it. Not even one second was spent on considering any softer option - like flicking it into a jam jar and releasing it outside. I hesitated only over the choice of newspaper, carefully selecting one lower down the pile of doubled-up tabloids (the Amsterdam evening 'Het Parool':'The Word') as the murder weapon. No point in ruining the most recent issue; might still want to read it. The end came swiftly and the evidence was swept up nicely with a blue jay-cloth. Only one little speck left on the white wall. Relief. Danger averted. No bugs in the bed for me.
So much for my self image as a life respecting soul. Just one little insect with feelers can put paid to that...
P.S.
According to Nancy's blog, the centipede is a shamanistic symbol for 'balance, coordination, ability to survive stress and beauty of movement'. Sounds like an advert for yoga!

We have had more centipedes in our house this year than in the last three years combined. We have found six in the bedroom alone, one of which bit my three year old son. Nothing like a trip to the hospital in the middle of the night to restore "balance, coordination, ability to survive stress and beauty of movement".
At least you didn't have a scorpion crawl up onto your bed.......
