Holland's burning...

Holland's on fire. This watery country, raised out of the sea, is ablaze with fear and hatred. A Moslim primary school has been burned to the ground. Mosques and churches have been vandalised. Slogans referring to 'White Power' have appeared. Two policemen have been injured by a hand grenade thrown from a house they were trying to raid. And, in the middle of it all, the too small voice of our Christian right Prime Minister telling us this is very 'un-Dutch' and calling for calm.

This is the Netherlands 10 days after the brutal murder of controversial filmmaker and Islam critic Theo van Gogh. Tragic, to see how quickly the thin veil of civilisation can be torn apart.

Be calm, people, just for goodness sake, be calm.
