Day One of drinking copious amounts of water. Not convinced this is doing me any good. I've got a thumping headache and feel as energetic as a wilting, waterlogged plant.
First e-mail of the day told me that the roles of four of my colleagues had been 'absorbed'. They would no longer be in the office. 'Absorbed' is a nice way of putting it. According to sources close to the scene of action, two of them received phone calls telling them to pack and leave immediately. The joys of working for a corporate. Work your arse off for them, stand on your head to meet their latest unattainable targets and then, heh presto, thanks for your loyalty and cheerio...
I'm pleased/amazed to see (this is a mixed bag post, by the way), that Israel is going to clear its settlers out of the Gaza Strip. Pity about the wall, though. Will it all happen? Not so sure.
Ol' Bushy Tail is doing his best to woo the Europeans back into the fold. I don't trust that guy one bit, sorry folks. Now that we're all friends again, why not test out our alliance by dropping a bomb or two on Iran? It's so damned obvious, you can see it coming a mile off. What's frightening is that Iran may in fact be a problem - or is that just media hype? So many lies have been told over Iraq that I wouldn't know any more.
What else? The goings on at the UN and the rather undignified resignation of a prominent Dutchman. I don't know the facts. Just know that he gives me the creeps. What really shocks me are the comments of fellow politicians, reported in today's Dutch press. One of them, from the rather vague D66 party is quoted as saying: "I fear that Lubbers has been the victim of political games or of a politically correct mafia of women who demand extreme distance from men, or a combination of both." Gives you some idea of how Dutchmen think, doesn't it?
As a Russian acquaintance said recently: "The Dutch are farmers. Some are big farmers. Some are small farmers. But all are farmers."
