Bush was here today. In the Netherlands, that is. He laid a wreath with the Dutch queen at a cemetery in the far south of the country where American soldiers, killed saving us from the Nazis, are buried. Then he left and went to Moscow to continue commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII.
He was in the Netherlands for 15 hours in total and for that he'd asked the Dutch government to close the stretch of motorway near the cemetery for two weeks - as a security measure. Amazingly, the government stood up to him. The fact that he even asked for it shows that he has zero comprehension of life in Europe. Close a motorway in southern Holland for one day and you can disrupt business traffic and cause chaos on roads in five countries.
Those Americans lost their lives fighting for a free Europe. It would be an insult to them to just bow down and let ourselves be run by the White House. Yet that - increasingly and on a number of different fronts - seems to be what our big buddy across the water is expecting European countries to do these days.
